Animal Adaptations Rottnest Island – Cut and Paste Vocabulary Activity – Differentiated

$3.00

This vocabulary and definition cut-and-paste activity supports students in building a strong understanding of key scientific terms related to animal adaptations using animals found on and around Rottnest Island (Wadjemup).

Designed for Years 4–7, the activity helps students actively engage with important vocabulary linked to structural, behavioural and physiological adaptations.

The resource complements the Animal Adaptations PowerPoint presentation, classroom poster set and reading comprehension passages found in my store, making it ideal for introducing, reinforcing or revising key concepts.

By matching words to definitions, students develop their ability to read, interpret and use scientific language accurately.

This activity links to the Australian Curriculum:
Science (Biological Sciences) – supporting students to describe how animals have adaptations that help them survive in their environment.
English (Language and Literacy) – developing vocabulary knowledge, reading comprehension and the ability to understand subject-specific language.

The Animal Adaptations – Vocabulary & Definition Cut-and-Paste Activity is a flexible, hands-on resource that can be used at multiple points throughout a Science unit on animal adaptations. It supports both concept understanding and subject-specific vocabulary development.

Suitable for students in Years 4–7.

This resource can be used to:
Introduce key vocabulary before reading or viewing new content, helping students become familiar with important scientific terms.
Reinforce learning after lessons using the PowerPoint presentation, posters or reading passages.
Support differentiation, allowing students to work at their own pace or with targeted teacher support.
Encourage active learning, as students physically match terms to definitions rather than passively reading.
Support English skills, particularly reading comprehension and accurate use of scientific language in speaking and writing.
Use in small groups or rotations, making it ideal for literacy or science centres.
Provide evidence of understanding, as a formative assessment task or completed work sample for student portfolios.

2 sets have been included to assist with differentiation in your classroom:

•Set 1 (1-8) – includes more advanced vocabulary and more detailed definitions
•Set 2 (1a-4a) includes simplified vocabulary and less detailed definitions

A glossary/marking key has been included.

This resource complements Animal Adaptations Rottnest Island PowerPoint Presentation, Reading Comprehension, Graphic Organisers and Poster Set. All differentiated and all available in my store.
