Animal Adaptations Rottnest Island – Matching Activity – Differentiated

This differentiated Animal Adaptations Rottnest Island matching activity has been created to compliment my Animal Adaptations PowerPoint Presentation.

The resource focuses on Adaptations (structural, behavioural and physiological) present for 7 different animals found on, and around, Rottnest Island, Western Australia.

This hands-on activity can be used to generate student interest when introducing animal adaptations as part of the Biological Sciences curriculum, or to consolidate learning that has taken place throughout the term. It provides a great opportunity for discussion on vocabulary specific to this topic, and, can be completed individually, with a partner, in small groups, or as a whole class.

Simply print and cut out as many sets as you need then store in a Ziploc bag/container with the marking key for easy access. Three sets with minor variations have been included to help you differentiate in your classroom.

Students are required to match an image with an example, and the type of adaptation (structural, behavioural or physiological).

Set 1: – A full set of matching cards with some vocabulary clues to assist with successful completion of the task, e.g. marine mammal, marsupial etc…
Set 2: – A full set of matching cards that have been colour coded for each of the different types of adaptations (structural, behavioural & physiological). Vocabulary clues (as above) have also been included.
Set 3: A full set of matching cards that have been colour coded for each of the different types of adaptations (structural, behavioural & physiological). Vocabulary clues have been highlighted to assist those students that require added support.

You may choose to include all the matching combinations in one task or simplify the task further by removing some cards based on student needs, on the time you have available, or what your teaching focus is at the time.
