Hinomaru – The Japanese Flag
$6.00
Hinomaru (ひのまる), meaning “circle of the sun”, is the National Flag of Japan.
Hinomaru features a vivid red circle centred on a white background, symbolising Japan as the “Land of the Rising Sun”.
701AD is the earliest recorded use of Hinomaru, when Emperor Monmu displayed a flag depicting the sun, during court ceremonies.
The circular shape and red colour of Hinomaru, is associated with the sun goddess Amaterasu – the mythical ancestor of the Japanese Imperial family.
