Inspiring Reading is a set of resources to support teachers and students in the teaching and learning of primary-school reading skills. These may be used on a whole-class, small group or individual basis as part of a regular school program, as part of a homework program, and/or to facilitate more effective differentiated reading instruction for students who need additional support or extension.

Principles

• Students benefit from systematic instruction to build skills in reading fluency and accuracy, comprehension and in thinking critically about what they read and how they interact with what they read.
• Students need support to develop the reading foundations of phonemic awareness, phonics and vocabulary. This is usually the focus of the pre-school and early years of schooling.
• Both during the early stages of learning to read and particularly once decoding skills have been established, these reading foundations must be complemented and built on with an emphasis on increasing reading fluency and rate, and developing students’ comprehension strategies and knowledge of text structures and features.
• A number of excellent resources are available to support teachers in helping their students develop their foundations of reading. The focus of Inspiring Reading is on consolidating reading fluency and onbuilding the secondary skills that must be developed for students to become proficient readers and to engage effectively with what they read.

How to Use

Inspiring Reading resources may be used by teachers to support their own program for the teaching and learning  of reading. They do not comprise a “reading program” in and of themselves, but when used thoughtfully and intentionally according to the needs of learners and their learning context, can be a valuable tool for inspiring and igniting in students a love of reading. Instructions are included on each resource, but how you use them is really up to your own personal preference and professional discretion. I hope that you and your students enjoy using Inspiring Reading!

The following components are included in the Inspiring Reading resource pack:

• Reading Log – students are encouraged to read widely from a range of texts suited to their reading skills, interests and needs (included in the reading fluency booklet).
• Oral Reading Fluency Scaffolds – students are supported to develop greater reading fluency and accuracy, with attention to oral reading skills such as moderating pace, expression, intonation and volume to maintain the listeners’ interest and enhance meaning. Students are also supported to increase their reading rate through repeated 1 minute reads, seeking to maximise the number of words read accurately in a minute over the course of a week (included in the reading fluency booklet).
• Vocabulary-Building Scaffolds – students are given scaffolding to help them develop a wide – and, where relevant, deep – vocabulary to assist in their reading (included in the reading fluency booklet).
• Comprehension Strategy Scaffolds (graphic organisers) – students are explicitly taught text comprehension strategies and guided to use these in their own reading. Includes 16 Graphic organisers/worksheets to support use of the CLASS reading comprehension strategies (those included in the Reading Comprehension booklet plus 11 more).
