Looking for an engaging activity to introduce a Science Unit to Year 6 students about Micro-organisms with a video included? This Scavenger Hunt is a combination of reading passages related to a narrative text to find code words, to solve the final mystery numerical code. This stress-free, printable scavenger hunt simplifies the adventure-no envelopes or room-to-room logistics. Just print the 10 reading passages, cut them out and cut in half, and place them around your classroom. Ideal for students aged 10-12. Younger students may need more assistance, ensuring a fun and inclusive activity.

But here’s the twist: the correct code words aren’t just on a different card-they must be discovered within the reading passages. It’s a challenge where each card builds on the previous, leading students to the answers. Follow the trail, record answers on the answer sheet provided, and solve the final mystery numerical code.

The final task is where students follow 3 clues to find a four-digit code. You can:

1. Purchase a 4-digit padlock and students need to use the final four-digit code to ‘unlock’ the padlock.

2. Use the locked PDF that’s included where it says, “Congratulations! You completed the scavenger hunt. Well Done!” with an image of mouldy bread. Kids need to use the code to unlock the PDF.

No prep, no props, no setup-simply print and play, making your teacher-life easier!

How it works:

Watch the introductory video to engage kids and set the scene.

Students start off by choosing any reading card. After reading the passage on the card, they locate the ‘code word’ question at the bottom, leading them to a different card. The challenge? They won’t know where to find the answer, encouraging multiple reads of the passages, for better comprehension.

Still a scavenger hunt? Absolutely! Students search the room for answers, ensuring everyone can participate without early finishers giving away locations. Cards can be scattered, placed on desks, used as stations or placed on a wall to adapt to your classroom set up.

This activity works best individually or in pairs. Students race to complete the 10 questions, find the secret word, and the secret code. Boost engagement with some friendly competition, making learning an exciting adventure!
