A Novel Study of Robert Newton’s Runner! Chapters 1-3

So, what do these amazing sets of lessons offer?

 First, it has clear and useful success criteria, a learning intention section, and an Initial reflection task. Here Students are instructed to write a prompt based on inferencing and critical thinking skills.

Next, there is a convenient before-reading section and this encourages both T and SS to discuss where and when the story takes place. Additionally, I have also created an incredibly relevant inquiry question about Richmond, Melbourne in 1919 vs. today.

I have added a detailed introduction to the characters in the novel with three important themes. I suggest that the teacher could potentially use these to structure an essay for assessment.

In addition to this, I have included comprehensive introductions for each narrative character type. I have created these tasks for students to critically match each character type to the characters from the book. For example, the confidant character can be attributed to Charlie’s friend ‘Nostrils’ because Charlie can trust him with his secrets.

A Brilliant after-reading task for each chapter and comprehension questions for students to either complete in class or as homework tasks. Additionally, there are also questions in Chapter 2, and these act as additional extension questions for students who finish early!

Finally, at the end of the lesson, you can find slides where there is a useful reflection slide on success criteria and learning intentions.
