Place Value Slap Game

Young students just cannot get enough practice of place value. When we think they’ve got it, they probably need more. But its so easy to go back to our familiar and comfortable ways of practicing place value and students (not to mention teachers!) quickly get bored. This is a versatile game for practicing place value students will love.

One of my favourite ways to use this is to put a hand slap page on my door. Students quickly learn the drill – sanitise, slap your number and then go to the mat. Instead of mindlessly walk into the classroom I hear giggles and laughter as they enjoy practicing their maths and it takes no extra time in our day. I also love this as a quick whole class game for that random 5 minutes that you have no idea what to do with. It takes seconds to stick a few pages on your board with magnets and you’re ready to go (and yes, my students cheer if I say we’re going to play place value slap).
