“Mr Barky Face” is a 15 page reading book about Maxie, a lovable German shepherd who gets into mischief sometimes. The companion student workbook contains 21 pages of literacy activities including print concepts, phonological awareness, literature questions and more.  These two items are the beginning of a series of books and workbooks. Unit overview

The book and student workbook have been developed for use in a multi-level classroom. The unit does not identify students by age or year level but rather by where they are in their literacy journey. This means it can be used in a primary school or with older, emerging readers.

For example, in a multi-level Year 1 classroom, some students are reading ahead of their year level while others are still grasping some basic literacy skills. With this unit, teachers can engage the whole class in the story then differentiate students’ learning by giving them different tasks from the student workbook to complete.

Or, if you are teaching older EAL students with limited literacy skills, you can read the book together as a class then pick and choose which skills the students need to focus on. They might be learning basic print concepts, phonological awareness, or they might be ready to write sentences about the book.

The activities can be used in small groups, one-on-one, during guided reading, as part of station rotations, with partners, or as a whole class.
