Reading Comprehension Skills FAN

This fan holds a summary of comprehension reading skills to support students as they work independently in literacy centres. They are like small posters to use as reference. Students love the novelty of these fans. Something they haven’t seen before, although the skills are familiar.

Students keep these fans on their desks or in folders to refer to as needed. The explanations jogs their memory and provides a quick reference for students to flick through for information as support to complete tasks during groups or centres.

Each blade has a simple skill summary. The blades are held together with a split pin, so you can include all or as many of the blades as you wish. You can add blades according to the skills and ability of individual children.

• Comparing and Contrasting
• Fact and Opinion
• Making Generalisations
• Drawing Conclusions
• Questioning
• Visualising

You can laminate a few class copies, to scatter around or have hanging as an available reference. You can also print individual copies for all students for individual use or give to particular groups working on a skill. Most students can cut and assemble these fans, themselves as a craft activity.

A suggested centre activity is simply reading and discussing the information on the blade. They allow students to recall and use the skills.
