Science Year 7 – Criteria and Rubrics for Assessment

The resource provides a comprehensive list of criteria and rubrics that align with the Achievement Standard (ACARA, 2022) and the Content Descriptions in the Australian Curriculum (ACARA, 2022). The Year 7 Science curriculum is used as an exemplar. The resource also includes examples of criteria and standards from individual state jurisdictions in Australia to provide support on adapting ‘elaborations’ or individualised descriptors which vary from one state to another. There is no single way to write criteria and rubrics, however, this resource aims to support teachers in understanding how to develop criteria from curriculum descriptions provided.

The standards for the levels in the rubrics are generic in nature, however, they comprehensively address all key skills and understandings in the Science curriculum. These criteria and rubrics would be relevant to many other educational jurisdictions, even if the curriculum differs, as the rubrics assess key skills and understandings related to secondary Science studies.

The resource provides proposed criteria, completed rubrics, and a rubrics generator for teachers to develop more specific criteria and standards relevant to their units of study.
