This 31 page booklet is designed for both the teacher and the student as a way to create an informed understanding, knowledge and appreciation of Peter Weir’s film The Truman Show within the context of Module B of the HSC. The booklet is designed to teach students how to develop a considered personal response by teaching them how to analyse the text’s particular ideas and characteristics in order to shape a rich understanding of the ways in which these characteristics establish the text’s distinctive qualities. The booklet offers a step by step approach to the Module which is intended to engage students in an extensive exploration and interpretation of the film by teaching them to appreciate the ways in which Weir portrays people, ideas, settings and situations to comment on the role of the media in our lives. The booklet includes a breakdown and explanation of the Module’s rubric, an explanation as to how to establish which part of the rubric is being examined in a question, a myriad of questions to test their knowledge as it develops, information about the definition and the role of The American Dream in the film’s narrative, contextual insight on Weir and the film, the Cultural, Philosophical and Technological Context of the film, HSC questions, suggested tips from HSC Marker’s of previous Mod B questions, worked examples, opportunities and suggestions as to how to shape individual informed ideas, worked essay questions, analysis tables, Practice question with marking criteria, thesis statement builders, a glossary of film techniques and devices and short answer questions and ideas designed to assist them in composing their own personal responses which will allow them to showcase their detailed knowledge of the film’s visual and literal language features in the context of the HSC, School Assessment and Trial. Within this booklet students are also given the opportunity to analyse, assess and comment on the film’s specific language features and form, to allow them to feel confident in their expression of complex ideas, by teaching them in a simple manner how to clearly and cohesively use appropriate register, structure and modality to shape their response. By progressing through the booklet students will learn how to develop their personal and intellectual connections with the text enabling them to express their informed personal interpretation of its significance and meaning which is integral to success in this Module.
