WORD OF THE DAY – Tier 2 Vocabulary Workbook

WORD OF THE DAY Vocabulary Workbook For Students is a book of worksheets to completed with teacher guidance. Each vocabulary worksheet features 4 words and there are 200 words in all!!

The intention is to do one word a day from Monday to Thursday and on Fridays you take time with your students to review the vocabulary of the week. Each vocabulary sheet has 4 new words to learn. The definition and the parts of speech (grammar) are provided for each word. Together you will complete the rest of the word activities together.

HOW TO USE

1. As a class/group, go through the word together and talk about the type of word and definition. Ask the students to give examples of this and encourage connections.

2. Brainstorm 2/3 synonyms for the word and record these in the synonym bubble. Sometimes appropriate choices can be drawn from the definition.

3. Brainstorm 2/3 antonyms (opposite words) into the antonym bubble.

4. Together, craft a sentence which demonstrates the meaning of the word. You might like to record a few options on the board and then the children can select the one they feel helps them to understand the focus word.

5. Finally, get the students to create a picture to demonstrate their understanding of the word and give them something to remember if they need to revisit the word.

I hope that your students enjoy learning these words together as much as mine do. It has been exciting to watch the growth in my students’ grasp of vocabulary and how that has impacted their oral and written language and comprehension during reading tasks.
