44 Fun facts to build up vocabulary and background knowledge
After doing much professional learning around student’s ability to read and comprehend one of the biggest influences to how successful a student was, was their vocabulary and background knowledge. Such a simple thing yet so many of my students seemed to lack this, whether it was about the body, animals, our world, history etc… they just didn’t know much outside of their own life.

I found myself feeling overwhelmed with all that my students didn’t know about the world and kept thinking about how could I introduce more of the outside world into our classroom/library.

So I started with a fun fact a week… it started as just something random or interesting I had learnt myself that I thought was useful for the students to know. It then grew into something that not only allowed me to build up their vocabulary and background knowledge outside of our everyday learning but it allowed students to get engaged and curious about topics that they would otherwise not have exposure to. We used our fun fact time for questioning and expanding on what we already knew and what we still wanted to know. During the week students were able to do further research on the topic and we continued to add to what we knew about the topic. Over the course of the term/year there was massive growth in their both their vocabulary skills and background knowledge.

This product can be used for any grade as students are never too young or old to learn and explore new facts.
