Back To School Reading Comprehension Passages to Illustrate – Read and Draw

Need a new way to have your students focus on reading comprehension? There are six short reading passages about the Back To School period for students to read, comprehend and illustrate. Having them draw the scene requires them to pay close attention to the meaning of the text and the details of the scene described so that they understand it completely. Drawing also makes it engaging and enjoyable.
A valuable thing to do is to have students compare their drawing when they are done. This allows them to analyze and discuss the parts of the text they used to make their drawing decisions. This helps students learn strategies from each other.

- 3 pages that have two of the 6 pages per page

Some ways it can be used…
- As a whole-class activity
- As a literacy center task
- With students needing small group or individual support with comprehension skills

Students will love this resource because they are short texts to read (even though they contain much to comprehend) and they will be engaged by drawing the scenes. They will enjoy comparing their illustrations to other students and discussing reasons for different illustrative choices.
