Introduction to Japanese Culture
$5.00
This a 42 page pack that includes 14 activities designed as an introduction to the Japanese culture, suitable for Kindergarten and grade 1. While I myself am not Japanese, I spent a lot of time researching as I was required to teach about the culture (not the language) as a pre-requisite for junior students before they started their formal language lessons.
The activities are based around a fun, hands on approach to give students โa tasteโ of Japan. Included are each of the printable activities, teacher notes to explain how to complete the activities and a YouTube link to watch a related video (if applicable to complement the task). My students really enjoyed doing these tasks and were excited to take their books home at the end of the term to show their families what they had been working on.
The activities included are:
- Cherry Blossom Tree craft
- Color By Number (AU/UK & US spelling included)
- Create Your Own Mini Sumo Wrestler (AU/UK & US spelling included)
- Cut Paste and Complete – Japanese numbers 1-9
- Flag Comparisons (Australia compared to Japan & the United States compared to Japan)
- Folk Tales – The Rabbit in the Moon
- Japanese Fan DIY
- Kimono vs Modern Clothing worksheet
- Labelling Japan – basic map with each island named
- Life in a Japanese Elementary School (Australia compared to Japan & the United States compared to Japan)
- Maneki Neko (Lucky Cat)
- Noh Masks
- Numbers in Japanese – Kanji 1 to 10
- Origami Make a Puppy Face
Other than a few basic art supplies, these activities are very much no prep, print and go.
