Prefix, Suffix and Roots Worksheets to help Spelling, Vocab & Comprehension

Get your students playing with morphology by adding affixes to word roots with these prefix, suffix and roots worksheets. They will be amazed at how many words they can make, and how the meaning of the root shapes the meaning of the word! Very helpful for spelling, vocabulary and comprehension!

These sheets are available in PPT and Google Slides formats, as well as Easel. They are designed for students to complete, but they are also well suited to a teacher displaying the word grids on a classroom screen and working through them with the whole class. One page is fully editable, allowing you to add your own roots and affixes to adapt to your student’s needs and levels.

Included in this resource:

• There are 21 worksheet pages. Each one is about a new word root.
• An editable page that allows you to type your own roots and affixes. Or print it blank and have students write them in.
• An introduction page where I have included a completed page so you can see how it has been filled out.

Each page includes:

• a note about the meaning of the root
• a note about the origin of the root (they all have Latin origins)
• an activity where students build and write words that can be made by adding prefixes and suffixes to the root
• an activity where students choose a word they have built and write a sentence to describe how the meaning of the root has shaped the meaning of the word
• a short handwriting practice task where they get to write 4-5 of the words they’ve built
• a chance to draw the meaning of the root. This helps students to solidify in their mind what they root means.

The word roots included are:

• ceed, cede, cess, duct, duce, flect, flex, form, press, rupt, ject, port, script, scribe, sist, spect, struct, tain, tend, tract, lev.

A wide range of prefixes and suffixes are included on each page to be added to the root
