Newspaper Scavenger Hunt Challenge

This activity for grades 4 to 7 is designed to be used as a team building activity with a focus on communication. Small groups of students work together to compete against other groups in locating the various objects in a newspaper that are on their list.

The main skills to focus on for this activity are:

• Negotiation to reach a decision

• Expressing opinions in a friendly way

• Suggesting instead of bossing / taking over

• Cooperation and Sharing

• Showing tolerance

• Respecting other people’s opinion

• Taking turns

• Including others in the discussion and decisions

• Being positive

Pack includes teacher notes on how to play and what to do, group role cards, 3 generic hunts, 4 themed hunts (communication and technology, mathematics, travel plus health and nutrition) and a blank template for you to design your own scavenger hunt.

All you need to do is collect weekday national newspapers (all the same kind but different dates), print off the scavenger hunts and get started.

Your students will love this team building exercise, that concentrates not only on working together as a team but literacy skills as well!
