Grade Level: Primary Years (2+)

What can this be used for?

This resource is intended as a ‘Fiction & Non-Fiction Reading Comprehension Assessment’ for Year 2 students in Queensland, Australia.

  • It can be used as a pre-assessment activity for a similar assessment/marking guide.
  • As a relief (sub) teacher lesson for Year 3+ using the 2 texts and a Venn diagram, before completing questions.

Included Texts:

It has 2 Zebra texts that students independently read before answering the comprehension questions on pages 2-4.

Text 1: Striped Animals

Text 2: How the Zebra Got Its Spots

Questions Included: 10 total (some have ‘a’ or ‘b’ extensions)

Page 2: Questions 1 – 7 – Literal & Inferential

Page 3: Questions 8 – 9 b – Cloze activity style

Page 4: Question 10a & b – Compares both texts through text/language features

Extras:

A marking criteria guide has been included in QLD’s ‘Guide to Making Judgements’ (GTMJ) format. It clearly defines student capabilities with an A-E grade.

Note: An answer sheet has not been provided, as answers may vary. Use your best judgement to decide if a student meets an A-E grade.

Suggested Student Process:

  1. Students can read and re-read the text to fully understand both texts.
  2. Highlight the language/text features of each text type.
  3. Answer the 1st and 2nd page of questions. (You choose if they are allowed to have both texts side-by-side with the questions)
  4. Answer the 3rd page with the text visibly accessible so they can note the differences and similarities between them and finally make an informed judgment with evidence as to what text they prefer and why.
