Debating and Public Speaking Topics | Small Fry Debates Set 1

$4.00

Small Fry Debates are the perfect way to get your students engaged and building transferrable communication skills through low-stakes debates. Strengthen their language, fluency of speech, and ability to quickly with topics that have no correct answer.
.ย
In today’s classrooms, there are so many students who are afraid to take risks in case they are wrong. So they stay in their ‘safe zone’ and don’t challenge themselves. By removing the pressure to be right, these debates give all students a voice. I’ve seen some great improvements in student communication skills, willingness to participate and even confidence.
.ย
Perfect for the first days of school, team building activities, building communication skills, the English classroom, Debating club, brain breaks or the final days of school. Suitable for classroom teachers, specialist teachers and relief or substitute teachers.

There are a few ways that Small Fry Debates can run
Practice for Real Debating
I use these debates with my Debating teams to help them think on their feet. I like to use Rebuttal Tennis or Ping Pong Debating to ensure all students get to participate.
.ย
Pair Debates
I divide my class into pairs to ensure that everyone gets a chance to speak. One student is Student 1 and the other student is Student 2. For each debate, I flip a coin or randomly allocate these groups to a ‘side’ (i.e., Student 1 may be arguing for pineapple on pizza, meaning that Student 2 will be arguing against pizza).
.
I project one of the debate topics onto the board and give students around a minute to prepare their debate. In my classroom, they should have 2-3 points, to be supported by argument/evidence. Each student then has two minutes* to present their points to their partner/opposition.
.
I then ask students to share some of the important (or funny, depending on your students) points that their partner provided.
.
Whole Class Debates
For some classes, this option is really effective. I present the debate topic and ask students to arrange themselves into groups based on their true opinions. In these small groups, I give them time to prepare four arguments (like a real debate). I always stress that everyone should be participating. The group selects two representatives to speak for the whole group.
.
The first speaker of Team A (whichever side of the topic you choose) will speak first, followed by the first speaker of Team B. Each will present two of their arguments. The second speakers of each team will then follow. I always encourage them to try to rebut the previous speaker’s arguments.
